Rap being a primary ingredient of\u00a0hip hop music, it is commonly associated with that genre in particular; however, the origins of rap predate\u00a0hip-hop\u00a0culture by many years.<br \/><br \/>Precursors to modern rap include the West African\u00a0griot tradition,<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0certain vocal styles of\u00a0blues,<sup id=\"cite_ref-tony_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0jazz, 1960s African-American poetry<sup id=\"cite_ref-ny-ali_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Sprechgesang<\/i>. The modern use of rap in popular music originated in\u00a0the Bronx,\u00a0New York City\u00a0in the 1970s, alongside the\u00a0hip hop genre\u00a0and\u00a0cultural movement.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Rapping developed from the role of\u00a0master of ceremonies (MC)\u00a0at parties within the scene.
